Mobile Networks, Data and Wi-Fi Connectivity in the Andaman Islands
Perhaps one of the most important information for the tourists going to the Andaman Islands is the truth about the limitations that they are going to face in terms of call and internet connectivity. Currently, only
Airtel, BSNL and Vodafone provide call facilities at the islands. Mobile data is almost non-existent with only BSNL providing 3G connectivity at selected locations. So, if you really want to access internet, you have to make use of your hotel Wi-Fi. A few restaurants and cafes provide Wi-Fi facilities as well. However, the speeds are very humble and during bad weather, expect continuous call drops and no internet.
The reason behind this awful condition is that the islands still use satellite link to provide internet. The bandwidth is limited and the vast number of subscribers has jammed the network completely. The Indian Government has promised the islanders high speed internet and have approved the plan to lay undersea optical fibre cable all the way from Chennai which will boost the speeds at Port Blair, Havelock, Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Kamota and Campbell Bay by December 2018.
As a traveller, it will be challenging for you on the first day but once your tour begins and you immerse yourself in the beauty of the islands, you will automatically disconnect from your phone and connect with Mother Nature. But still, call drops are going to annoy you so try to be patient!
