Museums in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands/Local Sightseeing at Port Blair

Samudrika Naval Marine Museum:

The museum is located at Delanipur, Port Blair and is run by the Indian Navy. It has a variety of exhibits related to the ocean and its marine life. The museum has 5 sections presenting the history of the islands, geographical information, people of Andaman, archaeology and marine life. It has a great collection of various shells. A skeleton of a young blue whale is also kept on display outside the museum.

Anthropological Museum:

If you want to know anything about the tribal people of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Anthropological museum, Port Blair’s finest, is the place to go to. It is situated opposite the BSNL office, Middle Point. It sports a great collection of authentic bows and arrows, chest guards and other items used by the tribes in their day to day life. It depicts the life of the Palaeolithic Islanders making it a cultural dome of knowledge.

Fisheries museum:

The Andaman fisheries museum is located at the Water Sports Complex near Marina Park at Port Blair. It houses over 350 distinct species of marine life. A variety of these are stored in glass jars. The shells and corals here are a representation of the vast marine life of the Bay of Bengal most of which is still undiscovered.

  • Closed on Wednesdays

Chatham Saw Mill:

The mill was set up in the year 1883 to meet the local requirements of saw and timber for the constructional work. It was the biggest saw mill in Asia at the time. Today, it is run by the state government. It is a storehouse of timber like padauk, gurjan, marble, satinwood etc. Further into the mill stands a museum which displays a variety of endemic species o timber and handicrafts. Entry Fee: Rs 10
